This can be done somehow better probably but heres my quick "solution".
I messed around with ao.cfg until i got it to look more "subtle".
Idea was so it helps with edges of things etc to look darker, no more than that. Not to look so obvious.
This reminds of paper i read somewhere where SSAO was only used as addition for GI.
Near-field, far-field solutions etc they were categorized like that there.
