they do through the mask idk why you would want them different, and no is the answer this would be a shader buffer change tho you are passing an image through the buff into memory and hard data storage that is gray scale. So your wasting a lot of space cpu and gpu memory doing this.
You would have to change the buffer in the source and then also change the shaders.
