Right now, in order to support terrains in my project, i'm exporting a mesh from World Machine and i'm adding it to the level, just like any other mesh. The obvious problem is that it can be quite heavy and drops the FPS a lot, depending on the size of the terrain. I chose this because the built-in terrain system has lot's of flaws:
- You have to draw it by hand, no way of importing a RAW/BMP heightmap
- Even if you draw by hand, with good brushes, the resolution is terrible. It looks like a Quake 3 terrain, completely different than the rest of the engine (which has good graphics)
Do you guys have any plans of implementing a terrain system? Something like this, maybe:
